Study Shows Coffee May Protect Against Atrial Fibrillation
Researchers from the U.S. and Australia reveal that drinking a cup of coffee daily reduces the risk of atrial fibrillation by 39% and offers anti-inflammatory and blood pressure benefits.
Researchers from University of California, USA and University of Adelaide, Australia found that drinking coffee may help protect against atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm disorder that causes rapid, irregular heartbeats and can lead to stroke and heart failure 🫀☕.
Doctors usually advise people with heart issues, such as atrial fibrillation, to avoid caffeine for fear of worsening symptoms. However, the recent study revealed that drinking one cup of caffeinated coffee daily reduces the risk of atrial fibrillation by 39%.
Lead researcher Dr. Gregory Marcus from the University of California explained that coffee increases physical activity, which lowers atrial fibrillation risk. Caffeine is also a natural diuretic that can reduce blood pressure, further decreasing the risk. Additionally, coffee contains anti-inflammatory compounds that may positively affect heart health.
Study Details
The study, called "DECAF", titled "Does avoiding coffee prevent atrial fibrillation?", was the first randomized clinical trial to investigate the relationship between caffeinated coffee and atrial fibrillation.
It included 200 patients with persistent atrial fibrillation or a related condition called atrial flutter. They were scheduled for cardiac rhythm monitoring and randomly assigned to drink at least one cup of coffee daily or abstain from coffee and caffeinated products for six months.
Study Results
The likelihood of recurrent atrial fibrillation episodes decreased by 39% in the coffee-drinking group. The anti-inflammatory effects of coffee also suggest that it may not only be safe but potentially protective against atrial fibrillation while replacing unhealthy beverages.
Atrial fibrillation cases have risen in recent years alongside obesity and an aging population. It affects up to one in three people and has been diagnosed in over 10 million American adults.
