A Spanish cardiologist has warned about the serious health effects of emotional stress, explaining that what is known as “Broken Heart Syndrome” can occur after emotional separation or the loss of a partner, presenting symptoms similar to those of a traditional heart attack.
The doctor explained during a television appearance that sudden emotional trauma is among the strongest forms of psychological stress. It can lead to anxiety, insomnia, and direct effects on heart muscle function.
He emphasized that positive emotions—such as love, emotional support, and strong social relationships—play a crucial role in improving heart health. Involving partners or family members in cardiac rehabilitation programs often leads to better recovery outcomes.
One of the most dangerous aspects of Broken Heart Syndrome, he noted, is its clinical similarity to a heart attack. Patients may experience chest pain and shortness of breath, yet medical examinations reveal healthy coronary arteries, unlike heart attacks caused by blockages.
The condition is more common among women and is frequently triggered by intense psychological pressure related to emotional or family problems. In some cases, untreated emotional pain may evolve into a real cardiac crisis.
The expert concluded by stressing that mental health care is just as vital as physical health, urging people to take emotional trauma seriously due to its direct and profound impact on the heart.
