Health officials in the UK have issued a warning about a rise in highly contagious norovirus infections as the Christmas season approaches, with more severe strains spreading, particularly among children and the elderly.
Reports indicate that the GII.4 sub-strain is currently the most widespread, linked to longer and more severe symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea in young children. Meanwhile, the United States has reported a notable increase in cases caused by the GII.17 strain, particularly in states like California.
According to the UK Health Security Agency, GII.4 accounted for approximately 31.1% of positive samples, while GII.17 represented about 19.5%. Despite the recent increase, overall norovirus activity remains within expected seasonal levels.
Infectious disease experts highlight that the virus spreads rapidly through direct contact or consuming food prepared by an infected person, raising concerns during family gatherings and festive events. Most patients recover within two to three days without intensive medical treatment, focusing on rest and fluid replacement.
Authorities advise thorough handwashing with soap and water, cleaning surfaces with bleach-containing products, and note that hand sanitizers alone are insufficient. They also stress that infected individuals should stay home for 48 hours after symptoms subside to prevent further transmission.
