Gallstones are small, hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder, which stores bile to aid digestion. They are particularly common among women during pregnancy and in the months following childbirth. Many women experience sudden abdominal pain, nausea, or discomfort without realizing that gallstones may be the cause, according to Times of India.

Causes of Gallstone Formation During Pregnancy and Postpartum
Hormonal changes are the main factor. Elevated estrogen and progesterone levels during pregnancy slow bile movement, allowing cholesterol crystals to form and harden into stones. These changes may persist after delivery, as bile remains rich in cholesterol and the gallbladder may not regain normal contraction immediately, increasing the risk.

Additional factors include rapid postpartum weight loss, insulin resistance, and diets high in saturated fats. Risk is higher among older women, those with multiple pregnancies, and women with higher body mass index, especially in the third trimester.

Why Some Women Are More Susceptible
With each pregnancy, the liver produces more cholesterol to meet maternal and fetal needs. Slowed bile flow makes stone formation more likely. Multiple pregnancies cause repeated hormonal fluctuations, weakening gallbladder contraction over time. After childbirth, a sudden drop in estrogen, use of estrogen-containing contraceptives, obesity, and high cholesterol further increase the risk.

Ways to Prevent Gallstones

  • Regular Ultrasound Checks: Early detection of gallstones is crucial for high-risk women.

  • Balanced Diet: Rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids, while limiting fried foods, sugars, and fatty meals.

  • Smaller, Frequent Meals: Keeps the gallbladder active and prevents bile stagnation.

  • Avoid Rapid Postpartum Weight Loss: Aim for gradual, steady weight reduction to lower bile cholesterol.

  • Stay Hydrated: Adequate water intake maintains bile fluidity.

  • Light Exercise: Walking or yoga supports healthy bile flow and digestion.

Following these steps can reduce the risk of gallstones while supporting digestive and metabolic health during pregnancy and postpartum.
