Wild Birds Linked to H5N1 Outbreaks in North America
Migratory wild birds have emerged as the main source of highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks in North America, prompting a reevaluation of biosecurity measures.
A recent study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with veterinary and research institutes, revealed that wild birds are a key driver of the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1, also known as the “pandemic among animals,” across North America.
Virus Spread Patterns
Since late 2021, the virus has affected wild birds, poultry, and mammals. Traditional culling of domestic birds has not contained the outbreaks. The study shows that migratory wild birds, including ducks, geese, and swans, are efficiently spreading the virus following an evolutionary shift in 2020.
Study Details
Researchers analyzed public data from Canadian and U.S. health and environmental agencies, tracking viral genomes and migration paths over 18 months. Outbreaks in agricultural farms were traced back to repeated introductions from wild birds, and backyard flocks were often infected roughly nine days before commercial poultry, serving as an early warning indicator.

The main challenge is preventing virus transmission via wild birds. The study recommends continuing investments in biosecurity, preventing interactions between wild and domestic birds, and considering vaccination of domestic flocks to reduce H5N1 spread.
