Court Sets Date for Compensation Lawsuit Against Amr Diab

The competent court has scheduled September 24 to hear a lawsuit seeking to require Egyptian singer Amr Diab to pay $1 million in material and moral compensation to Saad Osama over the slapping incident that sparked widespread controversy.

The lawsuit comes amid ongoing legal developments related to the incident, which attracted significant public attention after a video showing the confrontation between the two men circulated widely on social media.

Court of Cassation Upholds Amr Diab Fine

Egypt’s Court of Cassation previously upheld a 200 Egyptian pound fine against Amr Diab and ordered him to pay 10,000 Egyptian pounds in compensation to Saad Osama. The court also upheld Saad Osama’s acquittal of the charges brought against him.

The case became widely known as the “young man slapped by Amr Diab” case after a video from a wedding circulated online, showing the singer interacting with Saad Osama.

Amr Diab’s legal team had previously filed an appeal before the Court of Cassation challenging the fine and compensation ruling after the New Cairo Misdemeanor Appeals Court rejected the singer’s appeal and upheld the initial judgment.

Details of the Amr Diab and Saad Osama Incident

The incident began after a video circulated on social media showing Amr Diab slapping Saad Osama at a wedding while the young man was attempting to take a selfie with him.

Following the incident, Saad Osama filed a direct misdemeanor case before the New Cairo Court against Amr Diab, seeking compensation and claiming that the incident caused him psychological and physical harm.

Amr Diab’s legal defense, meanwhile, filed a report against the young man, accusing him of bothering and provoking the singer during the wedding. The defense said Diab had initially allowed him to take a photograph before he insisted on taking additional photos and grabbed the singer’s arm.

Court Explains Saad Osama’s Acquittal

The Public Prosecution heard statements from both sides. Amr Diab accused the young man of assaulting him and pulling his arm and clothes in an attempt to take a selfie against his will.

In its reasoning for Saad Osama’s acquittal, the court explained that placing his hand on Amr Diab’s body was not intended to cause harm and that his intention was not directed toward compromising the singer’s physical safety, but rather toward attracting his attention.

The court therefore found that the required criminal intent was absent and that the elements of the alleged offense were not established, leading to Saad Osama’s acquittal.

$1 Million Compensation Claim

The court is now preparing to hear the new lawsuit in which Saad Osama seeks $1 million in material and moral compensation, amid the previous judicial developments surrounding the incident.

The September 24 hearing is expected to determine the next step in the compensation claim filed against Amr Diab.
