Egyptian prosecutors have officially referred blogger Mohamed Otaka to the Criminal Court after uncovering evidence linking him to the publication of indecent videos violating public morality, alongside his possession of illegal drugs within his residence located in Cairo’s El-Shorouk district.

During extensive questioning, the defendant openly admitted that he intentionally published explicit and inappropriate videos on his social media accounts, confessing that his primary goal was to attract followers and generate financial revenue through online engagement and advertising programs.

According to investigations conducted by the Ministry of Interior, authorities raided the suspect’s apartment after obtaining the necessary legal permits, seizing quantities of hashish and cocaine. Upon interrogation, Otaka acknowledged that the substances belonged to him and that he kept them for trafficking purposes, while also leveraging sensational online content to expand his audience.

The case has drawn attention to what officials described as “the deceptive world of online fame,” where individuals seeking quick popularity and profit often cross ethical and legal boundaries, disregarding the consequences on society and youth.

Prosecutors have ordered the seizure of the confiscated drugs and digital devices, and directed that the defendant undergo forensic testing to determine whether he had consumed narcotics. He remains in detention for four days pending further investigation before being referred to court.

Judicial sources confirmed that this case serves as a strong warning against the misuse of social media platforms, stressing that anyone found guilty of promoting indecency or undermining societal morals will face severe legal repercussions under Egyptian law.
