The Nasr City misdemeanor court has postponed the trial of the defendants involved in the tragic death of young swimmer Yusuf Mohamed Ahmed Abdel Malik to February 26, while maintaining their detention during the ongoing investigations.
Investigations previously referred the president and board members of the Swimming Federation, its executive director, the competitions committee head, the championship director, the chief referee, and three lifeguard staff to criminal trial. They were accused of negligence and failure to fulfill their duties, which put the lives of participating children at serious risk.
The forensic and pathology reports confirmed that Yusuf's body was free of any illness or performance-enhancing or narcotic substances. The cause of death was determined as drowning-induced asphyxia. The child lost consciousness after finishing the race, fell to the bottom of the pool, and remained submerged long enough for his lungs and airways to fill with water, leading to cardiac arrest and complete respiratory failure.
