The Economic Court has decided to reserve the appeal submitted by social media influencer Qamar Al-Wakala against her six-month prison sentence and a 100,000 EGP fine, pending a final verdict in the upcoming session.
Her defense challenged the initial ruling, which also included a 5,000 EGP bail to suspend the sentence, after she was convicted of publishing videos containing inappropriate language and scenes on social media platforms.
Background of the Case
The court previously found that the defendant used live broadcasts to promote cosmetic products while using offensive expressions and displaying behavior considered against public morals. Her mobile phone used for filming was also confiscated.
Investigation Findings
Authorities revealed that she regularly appeared online to promote unknown-source cosmetics to increase views and generate financial profit. Some videos included unsuitable phrases and scenes, prompting multiple public complaints.
Defendant’s Statements
During questioning, the defendant admitted selling counterfeit cosmetics at low prices and using social media to boost sales and fame, stating she did not intend to violate the law.
Who Is Qamar Al-Wakala?
Her real name is Shouq, from Giza Governorate. She began selling cosmetics in local markets before gaining online popularity through short promotional videos.
As her digital presence grew, she faced legal trouble over publishing inappropriate content and promoting unverified products, leading to her trial before the Economic Court.
Awaiting the Verdict
The final ruling will determine whether the sentence is upheld, reduced, or overturned, in a case that has reignited debate over regulating online content and influencer responsibility.
