Hearing Begins for TikToker Karwan Mashakel’s Appeal Against Two-Year Jail Sentence
The Cairo Economic Court today began reviewing the appeal submitted by TikToker Karwan Mashakel against his two-year jail sentence and 100,000 EGP fine for defaming a well-known journalist and posting obscene content on TikTok.
The Cairo Economic Court began on Wednesday the session to review the appeal submitted by TikToker Karwan Mashakel against the two-year prison sentence, 10,000 EGP bail, and 100,000 EGP fine issued against him for defaming a journalist and posting obscene content on TikTok.
Authorities referred Mashakel to criminal prosecution for using electronic communication to insult and attack family and societal values, and for harassing the victim with messages containing offensive language.
Investigations revealed that Mashakel directed abusive language damaging the journalist’s honor and reputation via WhatsApp, and posted a video on TikTok containing offensive phrases, representing a clear violation of societal ethics and values.
The referral order confirmed that the defendant deliberately harassed the victim with repeated abusive messages and slander, leading to social contempt and justifying the legal penalties imposed.
