Cairo police have uncovered new details in the murder of Ali Maher Abbas, the well-known owner of a pasta restaurant in Helwan, whose death sparked outrage across Egypt.
Authorities received a report from residents about a man found dead inside his restaurant near the Helwan Metro station. Investigators arrived to find the victim lying in a pool of blood, having suffered fatal head and neck wounds.

Within hours, detectives identified and arrested the suspect — a registered criminal named A.H. — who confessed to killing the victim out of revenge for an old feud dating back to 2009. He told investigators that he felt deeply wronged after serving time in prison because of that conflict, and that he had promised himself to seek revenge once his daughter was safely married.

“I waited until my daughter got married. I wanted to take my right back with my own hands,” the suspect reportedly said, explaining that he had been watching the victim for months and planned the murder carefully.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had even appeared in a live video on social media hours before the murder, threatening to kill the victim — a threat he carried out later that day in broad daylight. Surveillance footage confirmed he used a sharp object to strike multiple fatal blows before fleeing the scene.

Police quickly tracked him down and arrested him in Helwan. The prosecution ordered a full investigation and an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The case has stirred sadness and anger among residents, who described the victim as a kind and well-loved man. The incident reignited public debate about revenge crimes that continue to devastate families and communities.
