The Appeal Court has set March 10 for the trial of businessman Amir El-Halaly, accused of money laundering, following a previous ruling by Cairo New District Misdemeanor Court sentencing him to two years imprisonment with work, a bail of 300,000 EGP, and legal costs, while referring the civil case.
According to a lawyer representing one of the victims, a memorandum submitted to the court highlighted that the case exceeds an ordinary commercial dispute. It emphasized that El-Halaly allegedly employed a professional criminal scheme, exploiting citizens and seizing their savings through fake entities and commercial appearances.
The memorandum stressed that the defendant persisted in his criminal actions despite prior convictions, showing disregard for the law and the rights of victims, who lost years of savings. It also underlined that such acts undermine trust in financial and economic transactions, calling for maximum punishment and both general and specific deterrence.
Investigation records revealed that the victims, including Mahmoud Helaly, known as “Amir El-Halaly,” and Mohamed Wahid, head of legal affairs, defrauded a client by promising a Mercedes-Benz C180 2023 in exchange for 36,988 euros, without fulfilling the delivery or refunding the amount.
