The Cairo Economic Court has sentenced former football star and television presenter Ahmed Hossam Mido to one month in prison, with bail to suspend execution, and imposed a fine of EGP 20,000, along with EGP 10,000 in temporary civil compensation to the plaintiff in a defamation and insult case.

According to case documents, the complaint was filed by a citizen who accused Mido of publicly insulting and defaming him through media statements that allegedly harmed his reputation and contradicted public morals.

The plaintiff’s lawyer argued that Mido used media platforms to make offensive remarks, prompting the filing of a lawsuit before the Economic Court, which handles cases related to publishing and digital media offenses.

In its ruling, the court found that Mido’s statements constituted criminal defamation and public insult, under the relevant provisions of Egyptian law.

The verdict is a first-instance ruling, and Mido’s defense team retains the right to appeal the decision within the legal timeframe to seek suspension or reduction of the penalty.

Mido, one of Egypt’s most prominent football figures, enjoyed a long international career before turning to sports analysis and television presenting.
