Today, the Minya Criminal Court handed down a sentence of one year of hard labor and a 100,000 EGP fine for both a father and his son, following charges of illegal excavation of archaeological artifacts in Beni Mazar, along with the confiscation of all equipment used in the crime.
The session was presided over by Sherif Ahmed Said, with judges Wael Mohamed Farid, Mohamed Kamal Diefallah, and Mohamed Ahmed Elshahat, and secretaries Maher Mohamed Hassan and Khaled Mohamed Abdelghani.
Investigations revealed that the suspects were caught in flagrante delicto by security forces led by Minya Police Chief Major General Hatem Hassan and Director of Criminal Investigations Major General Hatem Rabie, while digging in the Western Desert Fringe, possessing heavy equipment for illegal artifact extraction.
The suspects were referred to the public prosecution, which urged immediate criminal trial under the Antiquities Protection Law. The court emphasized that the ruling serves as a deterrent to anyone attempting to tamper with the nation’s historical heritage.
