Ibrahim Ezzat, a worker at a cafe in Cairo’s Mokattam district, has appealed for help after allegedly being dismissed and denied his financial dues. He says the total amount owed to him is approximately EGP 5,250, excluding a fine related to an incident involving the cafe’s closing hours.

Worker Describes the Mokattam Cafe Dispute

Ibrahim said he worked at a cafe in Mokattam and was responsible for managing operations during a period when businesses were required to close at 9 p.m.

According to his account, the owner instructed employees to keep the cafe open despite the official closing requirements. Ibrahim said he continued working based on those instructions before an inspection campaign found the cafe operating in violation of the prescribed closing hours.

Fine and Legal Case Over Closing Hours

Ibrahim said legal action was subsequently taken against him in connection with the incident and that he was detained. He said he now faces a case related to violating the closure restrictions, in addition to a financial fine.

He added that he attempted to ask the cafe owner to cover the fine because the owner had allegedly instructed employees not to close the business. However, he said his efforts were unsuccessful.

Dismissal and Alleged Refusal to Pay Wages

According to Ibrahim, he was dismissed from his job on August 14.

He said he then approached the employer to request his August salary and other financial dues, but was allegedly refused payment.

Ibrahim said he subsequently documented the incident and filed an official report, numbered 11232 Administrative, Mokattam Police Department.

He added that he is currently appearing before the competent investigative authorities to provide his statement. He also said the employer accused him of owing EGP 450.

Worker Says He Has Documents Proving His Dues

Ibrahim maintains that he has documents and work-shift records proving his employment period and the amounts allegedly owed to him.

He said he plans to submit those documents to the investigative authorities as part of the dispute.

According to Ibrahim, his total unpaid dues amount to approximately EGP 5,250, excluding the fine he says he incurred over the cafe’s failure to comply with the required closing time.

He believes the employer should be responsible for paying the fine because, according to his account, the owner instructed him to continue working.

Ibrahim said the suspension of his payments has caused him significant financial difficulties, particularly because of his personal obligations and financial responsibilities.

He explained that he is engaged and preparing for marriage, while also having other financial commitments.
