Two Major Court Rulings in Egypt: Actor Sentenced to Jail and Death Penalty Upheld in Serial Murder Case
Egypt’s courts issued two high-profile rulings after sentencing actor Wael Abdel Aziz to jail in a defamation case while upholding the death penalty against a convicted serial killer known as the “Tagamoa murderer.”
An Egyptian court has sentenced actor Wael Abdel Aziz, the brother of actress Yasmine Abdel Aziz, to one month in prison with labor in a defamation case involving a journalist.
The court also ordered a fine of 20,000 Egyptian pounds, while allowing bail of 10,000 pounds to suspend the execution of the sentence pending legal procedures.
The ruling followed legal proceedings that examined the accusations of insult and defamation, after which the court determined that the charges were substantiated based on the evidence presented.
In a separate case that captured national attention, the Court of Cassation rejected an appeal filed by Karim Selim, widely known in the media as the “Tagamoa serial killer.”
The court therefore upheld the previous death sentence issued against him after he was convicted of deliberately murdering three women with premeditation in different locations within New Cairo’s Fifth Settlement area.
Investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly used deceptive methods to lure the victims before committing the crimes, which sparked widespread public outrage when the details first emerged.
With the rejection of the appeal, the death sentence becomes final according to the country’s legal procedures.
