Al-Azhar Moon Sighting: Jumada Al-Awwal Begins Thursday Astronomically
The Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta will sight the crescent of Jumada Al-Awwal tonight to determine the start of the month, with a recommended moon-sighting prayer.
Tonight, Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Dar Al-Ifta in Egypt will sight the crescent of Jumada Al-Awwal 1447 AH, coinciding with the 29th of Rabi’ Al-Akhir. Astronomical calculations show the conjunction occurs at 14:26 Cairo local time.
The Astronomical Research Institute indicated that the new crescent may not be visible in cities like Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, as the moon sets before the sun. In Egypt, the moon sets 11–14 minutes before sunset depending on the city. Therefore, Wednesday, October 22, 2025, will complete Rabi’ Al-Akhir, making Thursday, October 23, 2025, the astronomical first day of Jumada Al-Awwal.
Moon-Sighting Prayer:
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recommended saying upon seeing the new crescent:
"O Allah, let it appear on us with blessings, faith, safety, and Islam. My Lord and Your Lord is Allah"
Scholars explain that “let it appear” refers to seeing the crescent, “blessings” refers to security and goodness, “faith” refers to strengthening belief, and “safety” refers to protection from worldly harms. Saying “My Lord and Your Lord is Allah” emphasizes God’s singularity and perfection in creation.
Muslims are encouraged to recite this prayer at moon sighting, as it strengthens spirituality and marks the beginning of the new lunar month with devotion and reflection.
