Al-Azhari Explains the Islamic Ruling on a Husband Who Constantly Quarrels with His Wife
Dr. Yousry Gaber explains the Islamic perspective on a husband who frequently disputes with his wife and provides guidance for the wife to address the situation properly.
Dr. Yousry Gaber, a scholar at Al-Azhar, responded to a question from a woman who complained about her husband being constantly quarrelsome and quick-tempered, refusing reconciliation despite her efforts.
Dr. Gaber stated that such behavior constitutes bad character, citing the Prophet ﷺ:
“The worst of people are those who hate people and are hated by them.”
He emphasized that the Prophet ﷺ accepted the excuse of the repentant and did not blame after forgiving, and that the best among people are those who slow their anger and hasten toward goodwill.
Advice for the Wife
Dr. Gaber advised the wife to be patient and pray, saying:
“Pray to Allah to improve your husband’s character. Do not insist excessively on reconciliation, fulfill your marital duties, be patient, and pray for him in your sujood.”
He also suggested a gentle approach for reconciliation by increasing prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ, noting that those who frequently pray upon him are remembered, and the Prophet ﷺ supplicates for them, with prayers being answered.
Dr. Gaber added:
“Guide him to gatherings of dhikr and the book ‘Dalail al-Khairat’, and read together. Prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ soften hearts, improve the relationship between spouses, and bring tranquility to the home.”
