Bedtime Supplications: Finding Peace Before Sleep
Bedtime supplications calm the soul and bring serenity before rest, reminding believers of God’s mercy and the blessing of another day of life.
Sleep is one of God’s great signs, a divine blessing that restores the body and soothes the soul. As Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And among His signs is your sleep by night and day and your seeking of His bounty.”
The night was made for rest and reflection, while the day was made for work and seeking sustenance.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his followers beautiful supplications to recite before sleep, bringing peace to the heart and forgiveness for sins:
1️⃣ The Prophet ﷺ would say before sleeping:
“O Allah, in Your name I live and die.”
And upon waking: “Praise be to Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.”
2️⃣ He told Ali and Fatimah:
“When you go to bed, say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times.”
3️⃣ He also advised:
“When any of you goes to bed, shake out your sheet, then say: In Your name, my Lord, I lay down and in Your name I rise.”
4️⃣ The Prophet ﷺ would cup his hands, blow lightly, and recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, then wipe over his body three times.
5️⃣ He said:
“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.”
6️⃣ He also said regarding Ayat Al-Kursi:
“You will have a protector from Allah, and no devil will come near you until morning.”
7️⃣ Among his nightly prayers was:
“O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.”
8️⃣ And he instructed:
“Recite Surah Al-Kafirun before sleeping, for it is a protection against polytheism.”
These bedtime supplications are more than mere words—they are a shield of light and mercy, connecting the believer with his Creator before surrendering to rest. They remind us that sleep is a small death, and awakening is a new gift of life from the Almighty.
