Breastfeeding and Quran Recitation While the Mother is Junub
Al-Azhar Fatwa confirms that breastfeeding while the mother is junub is permissible, she may read the Quran, and infant spit-up does not invalidate wudu.
Dr. Owaida Osman, Fatwa Secretary at Dar al-Ifta, explained that a mother’s junub or menstruation does not prevent her from breastfeeding her infant. Breastfeeding is a natural right for the child and an obligation for the mother, and it is not related to ritual purity.
Dr. Ali Fakhr, Fatwa Secretary and Director of the Sharia Accounting Department, added that a woman may recite the Quran while breastfeeding, whether she is in a state of wudu or not, and there is no text that prohibits Quranic recitation during feeding, encouraging mothers to maintain remembrance of Allah while caring for their child.
Regarding infant spit-up, Sheikh Mahmoud Shalabi stated that it is not considered najis (impure), as it is simply excess food, and thus does not invalidate wudu. He noted that holding the child during prayer is permissible if necessary, but having someone else hold the child is preferable to maintain concentration and comfort.
These guidelines reassure mothers that natural childcare, such as breastfeeding and holding the baby, does not conflict with worship or Quran recitation, allowing motherhood to be compatible with religious duties without stress or hesitation.
