Fasting during Ramadan is one of the greatest obligations, while prayer is the pillar of religion. Neglecting either intentionally carries warning and divine accountability. The common question: can someone fast without praying? Or, is the fast of a non-praying person accepted?

The Egyptian Fatwa Authority clarified that fasting remains valid even if prayer is neglected; prayer is not a condition for fasting. However, deliberately missing prayers is a sin, and acceptance of deeds lies solely with God. Ignoring prayer undermines the foundation of Islam, which is complete and cannot be divided.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated that Islam is built on five pillars: Shahada (faith), prayer, Zakat, fasting, and Hajj. Whoever maintains prayer upholds the religion; whoever neglects it, undermines it. Therefore, someone who fasts but skips prayer fulfills the fast but loses the reward of prayer and faces divine warning.

Former Grand Mufti Dr. Shawqi Allam emphasized that a believer must perform all obligatory acts for their deeds to be accepted and to draw closer to God’s mercy, combining fasting, prayer, and other acts of worship.

Scholars note that the intention (niyyah) for Ramadan fasting should be made from the first night after the new moon sighting. Daily renewal is recommended but not obligatory, and it is a Sunnah to make the intention before Fajr.
