Dar Al-Ifta: It Is Forbidden to Use AI to Depict or Embody the Divine Essence
Dar Al-Ifta states that generating AI images or models representing the divine essence is strictly prohibited in Islam, as it contradicts core theological beliefs.
Dar Al-Ifta of Egypt has affirmed that using artificial intelligence technologies to generate or design images or models that depict the divine essence is strictly forbidden in Islamic law.
The institution clarified that in Islamic belief, God Almighty is absolutely transcendent and cannot be compared, embodied, or visualized in any form, citing the Quranic verse: “There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”
It further explained that attempting to represent the divine essence—whether through traditional means or modern AI technologies—constitutes a form of misrepresentation and theological deviation.
Dar Al-Ifta emphasized the Islamic legal principle that anything leading to what is forbidden is itself forbidden, stressing that such depictions open the door to misconception and incorrect beliefs.
Muslims are encouraged instead to reflect upon the signs of God in the universe and His creation, which strengthens faith, humility, and spiritual awareness.
The statement concluded that glorifying the divine essence requires complete transcendence and refraining from any attempt to visualize or embody what is beyond human perception.
