Dental Extraction During Ramadan Day: Does It Break Fasting?
Many Muslims wonder about the ruling on tooth extraction while fasting, and Al-Azhar’s Fatwa Office clarifies the conditions for maintaining valid fasting
As the 8th day of Ramadan 2026 arrives, many fasting individuals ask whether tooth extraction invalidates their fast.
The Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta confirmed that extracting a tooth while fasting is permissible and does not break the fast, provided nothing enters the digestive tract. Bleeding during the procedure does not affect the validity of the fast.
The Fatwa also clarified that dental cleaning, filling, and local anesthetic injections for dental treatment do not invalidate the fast, as long as the patient avoids swallowing medicine or blood. Local anesthesia does not count as food or drink and does not reach the stomach, keeping the fast intact.
It is preferable, however, to postpone such medical procedures until after Iftar to avoid any doubts or difficulties.
Dua for the 8th Day of Ramadan:
-
“O Allah, grant us the best that Your servant and Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) asked for, and protect us from evil and mistakes.”
-
“O Allah, help me fast and pray sincerely, bless what You have provided me, and forgive me and my parents.”
Dua for the Eighth Night of Ramadan:
-
“O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, wealth, Paradise, and protection from Hellfire.”
-
“Forgive those whose only recourse is prayer, provide for us from unexpected sources, and make our deeds purely for Your sake.”
