Many people confuse the concepts of divorce, zihar, and ilaa, despite each having a distinct meaning and legal ruling in Islamic law. Dr. Abbas Shoman provided a clear breakdown of these differences.

He explained that divorce occurs when a husband explicitly pronounces separation, immediately affecting the marital status. However, in the first or second instance, reconciliation is still possible during the waiting period.

Ilaa, on the other hand, refers to a husband swearing to abstain from marital relations for four months or more. During this period, the marriage remains valid, and the husband must either return to normal relations or proceed with divorce after the specified time.

As for zihar, it involves the husband comparing his wife to a close female relative, such as his mother or sister. This is considered a prohibited statement and does not count as divorce, but it requires a specific expiation before resuming marital relations.

These rulings are rooted in clear scriptural references, each outlining the consequences and conditions associated with them.

The explanation stressed the importance of understanding these distinctions, as they carry serious implications for family stability and religious compliance.
