Al-Azhar Fatwa Center clarified that sleeping throughout the day in Ramadan does not invalidate the fast. The fast remains valid even if the person sleeps the entire day. The Fatwa cites Imam Nawawi in Rawdat al-Talibin wa ‘Umdat al-Muftin: “Even if one sleeps the whole day, the fast is correct,” and Imam Ibn Qudamah in Al-Mughni: “Sleep does not affect the fast, whether it occurs for the whole day or part of it.”
The Fatwa emphasizes that sleeping is permissible but with one condition: the person must not deliberately neglect the obligatory prayers, as that would be sinful.
Effects of Excessive Sleep in Ramadan
-
Sleeping excessively may cause one to miss the virtues of extra worship and remembrance of Allah, including prayers, supplication, and Quran recitation.
-
A person who sleeps all day without essential responsibilities still has a valid fast but may miss the reward of good deeds.
-
Excessive sleep is forbidden if it prevents the person from fulfilling family, work, or basic worship duties.
-
The reward of fasting is proportional to the effort and struggle, as the Prophet ﷺ told Aisha: “Your reward is according to your exertion and effort.”
Advice from Al-Azhar
Fasters should balance rest and sleep with worship and daily duties, making the most of Ramadan’s blessings. Engaging in prayers, dhikr, Quran recitation, and supplication ensures a fast filled with diverse acts of worship, maximizing the month’s rewards without losing them to excessive sleep.
