Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta to sight Dhul-Qi’dah crescent on April 17
Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta will observe the crescent of Dhul-Qi’dah 1447 AH on Friday, April 17, with astronomical calculations indicating the month may begin on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta has announced that it will conduct the official sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul-Qi’dah for the year 1447 AH on Friday, April 17, corresponding to the 29th of Shawwal.
The institution relies on specialized legal and scientific committees deployed across various governorates, tasked with observing the crescent after sunset on the designated sighting day. The official announcement is made only after confirming the legitimate sighting in accordance with established religious criteria.
Astronomical calculations indicate that the crescent of Dhul-Qi’dah will be born immediately after conjunction at 1:53 PM Cairo local time on Friday, April 17, 2026. Based on this, the first day of Dhul-Qi’dah is expected astronomically to be Saturday, April 18, 2026.
The new crescent will remain visible in Cairo’s sky for about 11 minutes after sunset on the sighting day. Across other Egyptian governorates, the visibility duration is expected to range between 7 and 14 minutes. In other Arab and Islamic capitals, the crescent visibility varies between 2 and 21 minutes, while in some cities such as Mogadishu, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta, the crescent may set before sunset.
The Hijri calendar is based on the lunar cycle, with each month representing the time it takes the moon to complete a full orbit around the Earth, making crescent observation a fundamental method for determining the start of Islamic months.
