Egypt’s Dar Al-Iftaa Clarifies: God Accepts Repeated Repentance if Sincere

Dar Al-Iftaa affirmed that God forgives all sins, no matter how many times they are repeated, as long as repentance is sincere and not accompanied by arrogance or disregard for sin.

Egypt’s Dar Al-Iftaa has addressed a common question about whether God accepts repentance when a person repeatedly commits the same sin after repenting.

Sheikh Ahmed Wissam, Secretary of Fatwas at Dar Al-Iftaa, explained that God’s mercy has no limits, and whoever sincerely repents after committing a sin will have their repentance accepted, no matter how many times they fall again. He cited the Quranic verse:

“Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” [Az-Zumar: 53]

He warned, however, that one must not deliberately sin while depending on God’s mercy, as that attitude reflects negligence and weak faith. True repentance, he said, is a constant return to God, not a one-time act.

Dar Al-Iftaa emphasized that the gate of repentance remains open as long as a person is alive and their heart beats with faith, urging Muslims to hasten toward repentance and seek forgiveness.

Supplication to Avoid Repeating Sin:

“O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin I repented from and returned to. Forgive me for the blessings I misused in disobedience to You, and for the sins known only to You.”

Supplication for Protection from Sin:

“O Creator of the heavens and the earth, protect us from our own evils and from Satan’s whispers, and guide us to all that pleases You. Fill our hearts with light, faith, and tranquility.”
