Egyptian Fatwa Official Warns: Don’t Pray Against Your Children, Pray for Their Guidance
Fatwa officials emphasize the danger of praying against children, advising mothers to focus on guidance and righteousness instead of curses or harmful prayers.
Sheikh Awaida Osman, Fatwa official at Al-Azhar, warned mothers against praying against their children regardless of disobedience, highlighting that a parent’s prayer can be answered immediately. Osman stated that parents are the guiding ceiling for their children, and any provocation may expose children to harmful prayers with serious consequences.
He cited a case of a man who constantly disobeyed and hurt his parents; they prayed against him, and he passed away shortly after, illustrating the gravity of such prayers. Sheikh Osman emphasized that prophetic teachings encourage always praying for good, not for harm, whether for oneself, children, or wealth.
Similarly, Sheikh Mohamed Kamal confirmed that praying against children is religiously impermissible. The proper approach to correct children’s behavior is through gentle guidance, good words, and positive influence, alongside prayers for their guidance and righteousness, e.g., “O Allah, guide him and make him among the righteous and obedient.”
Kamal noted that calm and kind admonishment has a powerful effect: when a mother addresses her child gently about wrongdoing, the child is more likely to listen and adjust behavior. He urged mothers to return to the tradition of praying for their children’s well-being, as it brings blessings, success, and divine favor.
