Evening adhkar are among the most important daily Sunnah practices that Muslims are keen to observe, as they have a profound effect on calming the heart, strengthening one’s connection with Allah, and providing spiritual protection from anxiety and harm. These remembrances act as a protective shield that brings serenity and inner peace, in line with the Quranic verse: “Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”
Among the most recommended evening practices is the recitation of short chapters from the Quran, such as Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, each recited three times. These chapters carry great virtue in protecting a person from visible and hidden evils, as well as guarding against whispers and envy.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught comprehensive supplications to be recited in the evening, including:
“We have entered the evening and the dominion belongs to Allah…” a remembrance that reflects complete monotheism, reliance upon Allah, and seeking goodness in the night while seeking refuge from all forms of harm.
Another عظیم supplication is:
“O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no deity but You…” known as Sayyid al-Istighfar (the master of forgiveness). It is one of the most powerful supplications, as it acknowledges servitude, admits faults, and seeks forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ promised Paradise for whoever recites it with certainty and passes away that night.
Evening adhkar also include expressing contentment with Allah as Lord, Islam as a religion, and Muhammad ﷺ as a Prophet, which is a supplication that leads to Allah’s pleasure on the Day of Judgment. Additionally, reliance supplications such as “Allah is sufficient for me…” strengthen the heart and provide resilience against life’s challenges.
These remembrances are not limited to spiritual protection; they also serve as a safeguard against envy and the evil eye. Supplications seeking refuge in Allah from all forms of harm are recommended, along with frequent repetition of “O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek help,” which carries immense relief for distress.
A believer may also supplicate freely for the good of this world and the Hereafter, maintaining sincerity, humility, and hope in Allah’s mercy and generosity.
