Gold-Based Wedding Gift Pricing Sparks Debate, Al-Azhar Fatwa Official Warns Against Discrimination

Dr. Hesham Rabie, the Fatwa Secretary at Dar Al-Ifta in Egypt, stated that ongoing societal discussions about facilitating marriage sometimes produce initiatives aimed at easing financial burdens on young people. However, some of these proposals, despite good intentions, may introduce imbalanced or questionable ideas.

He explained that recent suggestions to standardize the value of the bridal gift in gold grams, while also linking it to a woman’s level of education, represent an approach that introduces discrimination into what should remain a matter of mutual understanding and goodwill rather than material categorization.

He emphasized that associating a woman’s value with her educational attainment or assigning her a material worth contradicts the principles of Islamic teachings, which honor human beings for their inherent dignity rather than external metrics. Such ideas, he noted, may promote a commodification mindset that reduces individuals to measurable value, which is inconsistent with Islamic values.

He further questioned the logic of measuring a woman’s worth in grams of gold, clarifying that education is a fundamental right and a means of advancement, not a standard for financial valuation in marriage. He warned that such practices encourage social comparisons and increase psychological and financial pressure on families and young people.

He added that Islamic law does not impose fixed pricing for dowries or gifts but instead leaves the matter to custom and mutual agreement, provided it remains within reasonable limits without excess or hardship. He referenced prophetic guidance indicating that the most blessed marriages are those with the least financial burden.

He clarified that the bridal gift is originally a symbolic gesture of affection and commitment, not a price tag for the woman. Turning it into fixed numerical values strips it of its emotional and human meaning and amplifies unnecessary social pressures.

He concluded by stressing that the solution lies in promoting values of simplicity and contentment, and relying on balanced customs that ease the burden on young people while preserving the dignity and status of women, ensuring that marriage remains a relationship grounded in mercy and mutual understanding.
