Many wonder about the ruling on intentionally breaking the fast during Ramadan. Dar Al-Ifta explained that fasting is obligatory for every adult Muslim, and deliberately breaking it without a valid excuse is a major sin, as it violates the sanctity of the month.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever breaks a fast in Ramadan without a legitimate reason, it is as if he never fasted in his life, even if he had fasted.”

Requirements for those who intentionally break the fast include:

  • Sincere repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah.

  • Making up the missed day of fasting (qada) without expiation (kafara), as per Shafi’i and Hanbali scholars.

  • Differences exist among scholars regarding expiation; Hanafi and Maliki schools require fasting two consecutive months or feeding sixty needy people, while others maintain that qada and repentance are sufficient.

Dar Al-Ifta emphasized that knowingly eating or drinking during the day without necessity constitutes a serious sin, and the individual must make up the day and seek forgiveness, with expiation only required in specific cases like sexual intercourse during fasting.
