Instilling Devotion to God in Children
Al-Azhar and Dar Al-Ifta provide practical guidance for teaching faith, ethics, and religious values to children from an early age.
The Al-Azhar Global Center for Fatwa emphasized that instilling devotion to Allah in children starts with practical education and storytelling, highlighting that the Quran and Sunnah provide numerous examples to reinforce faith and ethical conduct.
Learning Through Stories:
Al-Azhar cited the story of Luqman (peace be upon him) as a model for teaching children obedience, patience, and devotion: {O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, this is of the matters [requiring] determination} [Luqman:17].
Training children practically in the pillars of Islam, such as prayer, is an effective method for instilling devotion from an early age.
Teaching Faith and Ethics:
The Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta highlighted that children have the right to learn about Allah, His messengers, His books, and the Last Day, while cultivating ethical behavior, respect, and proper social conduct.
Teaching children reliance on Allah, early prayer, and the practice of supplication strengthens their understanding of faith and ensures growth on a sound natural disposition.
Gentle Discipline:
Dar Al-Ifta stressed the importance of gentle discipline, as practiced by the Prophet ﷺ, to correct behavior without harm, noting that proper upbringing is the greatest gift to ensure children’s spiritual and ethical development.
