Is Fasting in the Month of Rajab an Innovation? Dar Al-Ifta Clarifies
Dar Al-Ifta confirms that fasting during the month of Rajab is recommended like other voluntary fasts throughout the year and is not considered an innovation, highlighting Rajab’s status among the sacred months.
The Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta received a question regarding the permissibility of fasting in the month of Rajab, as some claim that designating this month for fasting is an innovation, and that scholars like the Shafi’i who recommended it relied on weak hadiths.
Dar Al-Ifta clarified that voluntary fasting in Rajab is valid and recommended, just as it is for other days of the year. Even weak hadiths related to virtues of acts may be considered for recommending good deeds.
The month of Rajab is one of the sacred months mentioned in the Qur’an: ﴿Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the Book of Allah the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves therein﴾ [At-Tawbah: 36]. These months are Dhul-Qi’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab. The Sunnah also affirms their high status, making them among the most virtuous months after Ramadan.
Therefore, fasting in Rajab is not an innovation but a recommended act that strengthens piety and earns reward, provided it remains voluntary and not obligatory.
