The Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta was asked about the ruling on smoking during fasting in Ramadan and replied that smoking during the daytime in Ramadan is among the acts that invalidate the fast. It is forbidden for a fasting person to break the fast through any form of smoking, whether cigarettes, hookah, or others.
Dar Al-Ifta emphasized that claims saying cigarette smoking does not break the fast are incorrect, as scientifically, cigarette smoke contains substances that enter the smoker’s body intentionally, invalidating the fast.
The fatwa also listed other nullifiers of fasting:
-
Anything intentionally entering the stomach or head, like food, drink, ear drops, or asthma inhalers.
-
Injections via any route, including rectal injections.
-
Vomiting intentionally.
-
Sexual intercourse intentionally.
-
Intentional ejaculation.
-
Menstruation or postpartum bleeding.
-
Insanity or apostasy.
Dar Al-Ifta clarified that deliberately breaking the fast is a major sin, violating the sanctity of Ramadan, citing the Prophet ﷺ: “Whoever fasts a day of Ramadan without excuse or illness will not have made up for it even if he fasts all his life.”
