In the spiritual moment of standing before God in prayer, many worshippers seek deeper focus and serenity, which is where the opening supplication plays an important role.

The Al-Azhar Fatwa Center explains that it is recommended to begin prayer with the phrase: “Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdik, wa tabarakasmuk, wa ta‘ala jadduk, wa la ilaha ghayruk,” a well-known prophetic supplication favored by the majority of scholars, while some jurists allow beginning directly with recitation.

Scholars clarify that the opening supplication is not obligatory but a confirmed Sunnah. A worshipper is rewarded for saying it and not blamed for leaving it. Multiple authentic versions were reported from the Prophet ﷺ in different contexts, especially during night prayer.

These supplications include praise of God, acknowledgment of servitude, and requests for forgiveness and purification of the heart, all of which prepare the believer spiritually before reciting Al-Fatiha.

The supplication is said silently after the opening takbir and before seeking refuge and beginning recitation, though the Maliki school holds a different opinion allowing direct recitation.

Spiritually, this supplication prepares the heart, removes distractions, and strengthens concentration, helping the worshipper enter a state of humility and awareness.

In essence, the opening words of prayer serve as a gentle spiritual gateway, guiding the heart from worldly concerns into divine presence.
