Religious Rulings: Sleep and Ablution, Tawaf, Zakat, and Isha Prayer
Discover key Islamic rulings on sleep and its effect on ablution, uncertainty in Tawaf circuits, calculating Zakat for commercial property, and delaying Isha prayer before dawn, according to Al-Azhar and Dar Al-Ifta.
Masr Connect recently highlighted a series of religious rulings that are relevant to many people. Key points include:
Regarding sleep and its effect on ablution, Al-Azhar’s Fatwa Committee explained three cases:
Reclining sleep: agreed by scholars to nullify ablution.
Seated sleep: does not nullify ablution if brief, according to Abu Hanifa, Malik, and Ahmad; Shafi’i allows it if the area of impurity remains accessible.
Standing, prostrating, or bowing sleep: nullifies ablution according to Shafi’i and Ahmad, while Abu Hanifa permits it for positions resembling prayer postures.
For doubts about the number of Tawaf circuits, Dar Al-Ifta advises following the minimum during Tawaf; doubts after completing Tawaf are disregarded, following rulings by Imam Nawawi and Ibn Qudamah, with slight differences among schools of thought.
Regarding Zakat on a commercial property, Dar Al-Ifta stated that the owner must calculate the year-end value of trade assets, deduct debts, and pay 2.5% on the surplus. The property value itself is not subject to Zakat unless it is intended for trade.
For Isha prayer, the Fatwa office clarified it should not be delayed until before dawn except in necessity, with the preferred time being the first third of the night, discouraging habitual delay due to sleep.
