Ruling on a Menstruating Woman Visiting the Prophet’s Grave (PBUH): Detailed Fatwa Explanation

The Egyptian Dar al-Ifta received a question regarding whether a menstruating woman is allowed to visit the grave of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), especially considering the short duration of stay in Medina, which may coincide with her menstrual period.

The fatwa explains that it is preferable for a woman to wait until her menstruation ends or take medical advice to temporarily prevent it, then perform ghusl (ritual purification) and proceed with the visit in a state of purity. However, if the bleeding does not stop and the travel time approaches, it is permissible for her to visit and send greetings to the Prophet ﷺ while menstruating, provided she ensures cleanliness and avoids any contamination.

Scholars generally agree that a menstruating woman should not stay inside the mosque, but she may pass through it if there is a need and if contamination is avoided. This is based on various interpretations of Islamic texts related to purity and entering mosques.

Some scholars have also permitted staying in the mosque under certain conditions if cleanliness is ensured, although this opinion differs from the majority view.

The visitation of the Prophet ﷺ is considered one of the most virtuous acts of worship, and passing through the المسجد for this purpose may be permissible under necessity, similar to other cases where passage is allowed in Islamic law.

Accordingly, a menstruating woman may arrange her visit either by waiting for purity or proceeding with precautions when necessary, while observing the appropriate Islamic guidelines.
