Ruling on Fajr Prayer After Sunrise
Al-Azhar scholars clarify the ruling on performing Sunnah and obligatory Fajr prayers for those who wake up after sunrise.
Egypt’s Dar Al-Iftaa clarified, through Sheikh Awaida Othman, the proper order of prayer for anyone who wakes up after sunrise having missed Fajr. He explained that the Sunnah prayer should be performed first, followed by the obligatory two units, in accordance with the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, who prayed the Sunnah before making up the missed Fajr.
He emphasized that making up a missed prayer follows the same order as performing it on time, and that if two people miss the prayer, they may perform it together in the same manner and sequence as originally prescribed.
Sheikh Othman added that praying only the obligatory units is permissible, but performing the Sunnah carries greater reward and erases sins.
In response to a separate question about praying Fajr early due to travel or schedule constraints, Dar Al-Iftaa stated that it is never permissible to offer Fajr before its time, since early prayers are only allowed for pairs that can be combined, such as Dhuhr with Asr and Maghrib with Isha.
The institution reminded Muslims that Fajr must be made up after sunrise in the correct order—Sunnah first, then the obligatory prayer—and that advancing the time of Fajr is not allowed under any circumstance.
