What Breaks the Fast in Ramadan? 7 Acts That Invalidate Fasting
As Ramadan approaches, many Muslims search for what invalidates fasting, including rules about masturbation, wet dreams, and major actions that require making up the fast
With Ramadan drawing near, many Muslims ask about the actions that invalidate fasting in order to perform this essential act of worship correctly. Fasting is one of the pillars of Islam, and knowing what breaks it helps believers avoid mistakes and protect their worship.
There are several actions that invalidate the fast if done intentionally and require repentance and making up the day. The most important include:
1- Intentionally letting anything enter the body through an open passage such as the mouth or nose until it reaches the stomach or intestines.
2- Sexual intercourse or penetration, even without ejaculation.
3- Ejaculation caused by direct physical contact such as kissing or touching with desire.
4- Deliberately inducing vomiting, while involuntary vomiting does not break the fast.
5- Menstrual bleeding during fasting.
6- Postnatal bleeding.
7- Losing sanity, such as insanity, during the fasting period.
Regarding masturbation, it is religiously forbidden in and outside Ramadan, and if it leads to ejaculation, it invalidates the fast and requires repentance and making up the day.
As for wet dreams during sleep, they do not break the fast because they occur without intention. The person only needs to perform ritual washing to pray, and the fast remains valid even if washing is delayed until before sunset.
Knowing these rulings helps Muslims prepare for Ramadan with confidence and observe fasting correctly, away from actions that may spoil its reward.
