Zakat on Gold Jewelry for Women – Religious Ruling
Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta explains the ruling on zakat for women’s gold jewelry, emphasizing that intention determines whether zakat is obligatory.
A woman asked Dar Al-Ifta whether she must wear gold coins converted into a bracelet and if zakat is due on it.
The Dar explained that gold or silver jewelry intended for personal use and adornment does not require zakat, even if it reaches the nisab and a lunar year passes.
If the gold is intended for savings or trade, zakat becomes obligatory when it reaches the nisab (85 grams of 21-carat gold) and a lunar year passes, at a rate of 2.5% of its current market value, following the Hanafi school.
If gold coins are converted into wearable jewelry, the woman may choose to wear them or not, but her intention determines zakat: for adornment, no zakat is due; for savings, zakat must be paid. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Actions are judged by intentions.”
Dar Al-Ifta also cited Imam Ibn Qudamah in Al-Mughni, noting that intention alone can trigger zakat obligation if the jewelry is intended for trade, even without actual use, highlighting the critical role of intent in Islamic rulings on zakat.
