Samsung has announced a major innovation in its latest Galaxy Watch 8, introducing the Antioxidant Index, a groundbreaking tool designed to measure carotenoid levels in the skin and evaluate long-term wellness and dietary quality.
What is the Antioxidant Index?
This feature assesses carotenoids, natural antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, to provide a measurable reflection of a user’s nutrition.
Through a quick five-second fingertip scan, the results are displayed in three simple categories:
Very Low: Less than 50% of the WHO-recommended daily intake (400g of fruits and vegetables).
Low: Between 50% and 100% of the daily target.
Ideal: Meeting or exceeding the recommended antioxidant intake.
Samsung explains that lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress, and physical activity can also affect the results, providing a holistic health picture when combined with sleep tracking, vascular health monitoring, and daily activity insights.
How Does It Work?
Samsung developed a miniaturized optical sensor using multiple LED wavelengths and a custom light detector to measure how the skin absorbs light.
Instead of lasers, it analyzes light absorption patterns, and built-in algorithms adjust in real time for greater accuracy.
To ensure consistency across different skin tones, the sensor measures from the fingertip, where melanin levels are lower. Light pressure during scanning also helps minimize blood flow interference, resulting in more precise readings.
