Google tests new battery-saving mode for Pixel’s Always-On Display

Google is testing a feature that will automatically power down the Always-On Display when no user activity is detected, helping reduce battery drain while preserving glanceability.

Google is ramping up its efforts to boost battery efficiency in Pixel devices, and fresh leaks reveal a new experimental feature aimed at reducing the power draw of the Always-On Display (AOD). The idea is simple: when the phone is idle, the AOD may temporarily shut off to conserve energy.
The hints were discovered in Android’s Canary build, where new strings in the display settings refer to “Turn off display on inactivity.”

When the system detects no user interaction — e.g. no motion or screen touches — it may turn off the AOD to save battery.

It likely uses sensors such as proximity, ambient light, and accelerometer/gyroscope to infer whether the device is being actively used.

The option may appear in Settings > Display > Always-On Display, allowing users to toggle it on/off.

Direct benefits for users

Lower power consumption during idle periods or when the phone is left unattended.

Potential reduction of screen burn-in risks by limiting the time AOD remains lit unnecessarily.

Users may enjoy the convenience of AOD (time, notifications) without as much concern for battery drain.

The ability to fine-tune brightness and display elements inside AOD for further optimization.

Possible limitations & challenges

The feature is not yet public, and its behavior might evolve before official release.

Detecting “inactivity” accurately could be tricky — false positives may cause the AOD to shut off when the user expects it to stay on.

Some Pixel models may lack the hardware or sensor support for this feature.

Some users prefer AOD always on (for accessibility or glanceability), so offering a disable option is essential.

What to expect going forward

This feature may roll out via a future Android update or Pixel Feature Drop. Support may start with newer models and then expand to older ones.
Further enhancements might include dynamic brightness adjustment within AOD, context-aware clock styles, or deeper power optimizations
