After Nigeria Match, CAF Fines Algeria $100,000 in Disciplinary Sanctions
CAF imposes heavy financial and disciplinary penalties on Algeria following incidents in the Nigeria quarterfinal clash.
The Algerian Football Federation has received an official letter from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) detailing the sanctions imposed on the national team following incidents during the quarterfinal match against Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF confirmed that the penalties will be enforced during Algeria’s campaign in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after reviewing several misconduct violations on and off the pitch.
Among the decisions, CAF suspended goalkeeper Luca Zidane and defender Rafiq Belghali, in addition to a $5,000 fine for unsporting behavior after four players received yellow cards.
A further $25,000 fine was imposed for inappropriate actions by players and officials after the final whistle, which CAF said harmed the image of the match.
Regarding supporters, CAF fined Algeria $5,000 for the use of flares, another $5,000 for throwing objects onto the field, and $10,000 for failing to respect security procedures after some fans attempted to cross barriers.
The largest penalty, $50,000, was issued due to offensive gestures by fans toward match officials, including waving banknotes at referees.
In total, the sanctions reached $100,000, following Algeria’s elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after a 2–0 defeat to Nigeria.
