CAF Rules Out Increasing Number of Teams in CAF Champions League
The Confederation of African Football has decided not to expand the number of participating clubs in the CAF Champions League next season due to scheduling constraints
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially settled the ongoing debate regarding the potential expansion of the CAF Champions League, deciding to maintain the current format without increasing the number of participating teams ⚽🔥.
The decision came after internal discussions within CAF committees, as several football associations had requested additional slots in the competition due to the growing competitiveness in domestic leagues 🏆.
Egyptian clubs, in particular, were hoping for an increase in the number of participants, given the intense competition for the top positions in the national league, which would have allowed more teams to represent Egypt in the continental tournament 🔴⚽.
However, CAF rejected the proposal at this stage due to the tight African football calendar, as any expansion would result in more matches, especially in the preliminary rounds, placing additional strain on the schedule 📅⚠️.
The upcoming major commitments across the continent, including preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, also played a key role in postponing the idea of expanding the tournament 🌍🏆.
CAF believes that any structural changes must be carefully studied to avoid negatively impacting the competition format, logistics, and overall quality of the tournament, especially with increasing international football commitments 🔍⚽.
As a result, CAF has decided to postpone the expansion proposal indefinitely, stating that it may be reconsidered in the future once a suitable calendar and implementation framework are established ⏳📊.
This means the CAF Champions League will continue in its current format, with qualification spots allocated as per existing regulations without any changes for the upcoming season 🏟️🔥.
Despite the continuous development of African club competitions, the expansion plan remains on hold until conditions allow for a balanced and well-structured implementation 🌍⚽.
