Egypt’s Public Prosecution has ordered the owner of a private school in the First Settlement area to be detained for four days pending investigation over allegations that he used students’ parents’ personal data and documents to obtain educational loans in their names without their knowledge or consent.
Details of the Alleged Misuse of Parents’ Data
The Interior Ministry investigated complaints submitted by a number of parents at a private school in the First Settlement area.
The parents alleged that the school administration had used their personal information to obtain educational loans in their names from a consumer finance company without their knowledge.
The Interior Ministry said videos containing complaints from parents were circulated by television talk shows, news pages and social media accounts, prompting authorities to examine the allegations.
Five Parents File Complaints
Investigations found that on August 19, the First Settlement Police Department received complaints from five parents of students at the school, all residents of Cairo.
The complainants said the school administration had allegedly used their personal information, along with the information of other parents, to obtain educational loans in their names from a consumer finance company located within the police department’s jurisdiction.
National ID Copies Allegedly Used
According to the Interior Ministry’s statement, the parents said the school administration used copies of their national ID cards that had been kept by the school’s student affairs department during procedures related to obtaining the loans.
The parents said they had not been aware of or consented to the use of their documents for financial transactions.
School Owner Arrested
Security authorities identified and arrested the owner of the school.
Authorities said he had a criminal record and was residing within the jurisdiction of the Fifth Settlement Police Department.
When confronted with the allegations, the school owner admitted to committing the incident as described, according to the Interior Ministry.
The necessary legal measures were taken, and the Public Prosecution subsequently ordered his four-day detention pending investigation.
