“Highest in History”.. Jes Thorup Joins Al Ahly on Record-Breaking Contract
Danish reports reveal that Jes Thorup signed a three-year contract with Al Ahly, making him one of the highest-paid Danish coaches ever, and bringing his full technical staff to Cairo.
Danish newspaper Tipsbladet reported details of coach Jes Thorup’s move to Al Ahly, one of Africa’s largest clubs, after he agreed to a three-year contract worth at least 60 million Danish kroner net, approximately $9 million.
The report stated that Al Ahly secured the deal after fierce competition from other clubs. Thorup had drawn attention due to his remarkable success with Augsburg in the German league, achieving historic wins and records over two seasons.
The 55-year-old coach will receive a net annual salary of 20 million Danish kroner, equivalent to around 150 million kroner before taxes, plus bonuses and incentives that could double his income if the expected successes are achieved, making him one of the highest-earning Danish coaches ever.
The report added that Thorup will bring his full technical staff to Cairo, with up to six assistants, signaling Al Ahly’s ambition for a major sporting project under his leadership. The Danish media referred to the Egyptian club as the “New Pharaohs” in African football.
Al Ahly is Africa’s most decorated club, with 45 league titles, 39 domestic cups, and 12 CAF Champions League trophies, boasting a fan base exceeding 80 million supporters, highlighting the magnitude of the project Thorup is stepping into.
