Legendary Italian Goalkeeper Lorenzo Buffon Passes Away at 95
Lorenzo Buffon, one of Italy’s greatest goalkeepers, has passed away at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy of triumphs with AC Milan and the Italian national team and inspiring future generations.
Lorenzo Buffon, celebrated as one of Italy’s finest goalkeepers, died at 95 in Udine, Italy. Nicknamed "The Pincer" for his agility and exceptional ball control, Buffon was a key figure for AC Milan in the 1950s, helping the team secure five Serie A titles.
AC Milan mourned their legendary keeper in a statement on X, saying: "The hands that led Milan to countless victories in the 1950s have left us. Lorenzo Buffon, a kind man with a big heart for the Rossoneri, we bid farewell with deep emotion and honor his memory."
Born on December 19, 1929, in Udine, Buffon played for Milan, Genoa, Inter Milan, and Fiorentina, and earned 15 caps with the Italian national team. He is also the second cousin of Gianluigi Buffon, the 2006 World Cup-winning goalkeeper.
Gianluigi Buffon, former Juventus goalkeeper, expressed his admiration, saying Lorenzo inspired generations with his talent and passion for football. "As a child, I remember seeing his giant photo leaping over San Siro to save a ball—it left a lasting impact on me. Today, I bid him farewell with respect and admiration," he added.
