Liverpool stuns the transfer market by signing a German star in a record-breaking deal.
Liverpool is close to signing German star Florian Wirtz for £116 million in what could be the most expensive deal in the club’s history.
English club Liverpool is on the verge of signing young German star Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal that could exceed £116 million (around $156 million), making it one of the most expensive transfers in British football history.
This move highlights Liverpool’s determination to remain highly competitive following their recent 20th Premier League title win, which equaled the all-time record. The club's management appears keen to strengthen the squad with top-tier talent — and Wirtz is at the forefront of that effort.
Wirtz, 22, is considered one of the brightest talents in European football. He has attracted attention since breaking into Leverkusen’s first team at the age of 17. He became a key player for the historic 2023–2024 side that won the domestic double (league and cup) without a single defeat. He is also a crucial part of the German national team setup.
According to informed sources, Liverpool has agreed to pay an initial £100 million, with an additional £16 million in performance-related bonuses. With two years remaining on Wirtz’s current contract, Bayer Leverkusen had strong leverage in negotiations.
The transfer would place Wirtz among the most expensive players in Premier League history, surpassing Enzo Fernández’s £106.7 million move to Chelsea in 2023 and Moisés Caicedo’s £115 million transfer in the same year.
If finalized, the deal would break Liverpool’s all-time transfer record and signal the club’s serious intent to return to the European elite by signing world-class players capable of making a long-term impact.
