🛑 Surprise Cancellation of Malawi vs. Equatorial Guinea Match
The ninth round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup witnessed a surprising twist after the Malawi vs. Equatorial Guinea match, scheduled for Thursday evening, was canceled due to the Equatorial Guinean players’ protest and refusal to travel.
The game was set to kick off at 7:00 PM Cairo time at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, the Malawian capital. However, the Malawian Football Association officially announced the cancellation, citing “emergency travel issues concerning the visiting team.”
⚽ Three Points Bring Malawi Closer to Second Place
The match result is expected to be awarded to Malawi, granting them three points and temporarily raising their tally to 13 points, narrowing the gap to just two points behind Namibia, who currently occupy second place and are provisionally in the playoff spot, ahead of their game against Liberia later in the day.
As for Equatorial Guinea, who have the same number of points, their chances of qualifying are now almost over, amid a deep internal crisis affecting the team.
🇬🇶 Internal Crisis Hits Equatorial Guinea
According to African media reports, Equatorial Guinea’s players refused to travel to Malawi in protest against their football federation, due to escalating disputes with the administration.
The roots of the crisis go back over a year and a half, following a series of governance scandals that rocked the federation — particularly after the team’s strong performance in the last Africa Cup of Nations, where they exited in the Round of 16.
Since then, tensions between players and officials have intensified, with public accusations of financial mismanagement and poor planning.
🧨 Tensions Escalate Ahead of AFCON 2025
This turmoil isn’t new. In February 2024, star striker Emilio Nsue, the team’s top scorer at AFCON 2023, released a controversial video accusing federation officials of embezzling team funds.
He was suspended from international play for a period before later returning to the squad, but divisions within the team never fully settled.
This crisis comes less than two months before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Equatorial Guinea face a tough group that includes Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Sudan, raising serious concerns about the team’s readiness. 🏆🔥
🏁 Tunisia Lead the Group — Tight Race for Second Place
Tunisia top the group with 22 points and have already secured World Cup qualification. Meanwhile, the battle for second place remains heated between Namibia (12 points), Liberia (11 points), and Malawi (10 points before the administrative win).
Equatorial Guinea’s chances, however, have diminished sharply, leaving them almost out of contention.
