Former German international Toni Kroos appears to be taking his first serious steps toward becoming a football coach, nearly two years after stepping away from professional competition.
The former Real Madrid midfielder has expressed his intention to join a coaching course designed for elite former players during the 2027-2028 season, potentially marking the beginning of his transition from the pitch to the technical area.
Toni Kroos Plans to Obtain a Higher Coaching License
Kroos currently holds a coaching license that allows him to lead a team up to the third tier. His route has been made easier through a system designed to recognize the extensive experience of former elite footballers.
However, his current qualification does not allow him to take charge as head coach of a team competing in the first or second tier.
For now, Kroos can work as part of a coaching staff in an assistant role while continuing his development as a potential future manager.
Why Is Kroos Targeting the 2027-2028 Course?
The former Real Madrid star is reportedly targeting the 2027-2028 coaching course because the previous season's program has limited availability for elite former players.
The number of participants is restricted to 20 coaches per season, meaning not every player eligible for the accelerated coaching pathway can join immediately.
As a result, Kroos is preparing for the next available opportunity while continuing to gain practical experience away from professional competition.
Toni Kroos Continues Working With Young Players
Kroos is currently involved with his football academy in Boadilla, where he contributes to the development and education of young players.
His work at the academy gives him valuable exposure to coaching, player development, and the process of helping younger footballers improve their technical and tactical understanding.
This experience could become an important foundation if Kroos eventually decides to pursue a full-time coaching career.
Could Toni Kroos Return to Real Madrid?
A future return to Real Madrid remains a possibility, particularly because of the strong relationship Kroos built with the club during his playing career.
Real Madrid has previously considered bringing Kroos back into the club structure, with president Florentino Perez interested in having the former midfielder around Valdebebas on a regular basis.
Kroos also held discussions with Jose Angel Sanchez about a potential return, although the two sides did not find the right formula to make the move happen at that time.
Kroos Could Have a Future Role at Real Madrid
Despite the absence of an immediate agreement, the possibility of Kroos returning to Real Madrid has not disappeared.
His knowledge of elite football, experience at the highest level, and long association with the club could make him a valuable figure within its sporting structure in the future.
Kroos Is Taking His New Career Step by Step
Rather than rushing into a decision, Kroos appears to be approaching his new career gradually.
After an exceptional playing career, coaching could become the next major chapter in his football journey. His current work with young players and plans to continue his coaching education suggest that he is carefully preparing for life on the sidelines.
When Could Toni Kroos Begin His Coaching Career?
Kroos is targeting the coaching course scheduled for the 2027-2028 season, which would represent an important step toward obtaining the qualification required to manage teams at higher levels.
Can Toni Kroos Currently Manage a First-Tier Team?
No. His current coaching qualification does not allow him to serve as head coach of a first- or second-tier team, although he can work as an assistant coach.
What Is Toni Kroos Doing Now?
Kroos is working with his football academy in Boadilla, where he helps develop young players while preparing for the next stage of his career.
